Good evening! Hope everyone is feeling fine on this #MethodMonday ✨ With all of this craziness going around, I thought something soothing would be in order, so this week's dive is Where We Come From by Popcaan (3:43-4:07)
There is a lot of pervading wisdom around how to keep a listener engaged and tuned in, both for a live set and a recorded piece. Lots of that wisdom says to start in hot at the beginning to establish attention and end with a bang so they remember. The former is a lot more straightforward: come in with some energy and wake some people up. Get the blood going and get people dancing and moving. What you conclude with at the end, though, is a lot more nebulous and depends a lot upon the ethos you want to leave behind. What Popcaan provides in this song is an epilogue that provides icing on an already delicious cake. While the album is an upbeat danceable journey that ranges in energy and intensity, it's this ode to his hometown that he takes a moment to reflect and feel the mellow vibes, hammered home at the end, ensuring that you join in the meditation and feel what he is feeling. Listening to this melodic, peaceful love song to his thugs gives me such a validating feeling on what music should make you feel. It's as if we've finished a book we love and the author is kind enough to include an epilogue, giving us a final taste to savor before closing the book, rewarding us for reading on. Thank you for the dessert! Sure is a mighty tasty little soul snack...
Even before I began the actual recording process of WhenInRomeDome, I knew that I wanted this essence to bookend the project, an appropriate way to land after literally taking off and taking flight. The essence ended up pervading quite a bit of it, no more so than on Wrinkly Collars, the final track of the album. Have a listen. Feel the vibe. Let me know where it takes you.
